All papers presented at the WCEH 2009 have been accepted by the program committee, in an anonymous process, to insure ensure a high scholarly standard. Three members of the program committeem the, two of whose expertise most closely fitted the contribution keywords, have carefully evaluated each contribution for its scholarly value, its novelty, its suitability for the congress and they have also asked the question; does if the proposed contribution can deepen our understanding of environmental history?. In those cases where reviewers disagreed in their evaluation, 2 two more reviews have been collected. The entire process was done anonymously, and all reviewerd reviewers had to declare conflicts of interest. The overall performance of the review system was checked with statistical analysis, to detect possible biases or uneven criteria. No such bias could be detected.
The resulting list of accepted and rejected papers is the basis for the construction of the provisional program. Within papers of the same ranking, papers are selected to increase the diversity of theme and approach, but also of nationality, gender and career-stage.
The acceptance of a panel, paper or poster remains provisional until the scholar has paid the congress fee. Payment should be made at the latest by March 15th, 2009, at the latest. Please be aware that conference fees are reduced if payment is made before February 15th, 2009. (Early Birds).
We keep a waiting list. If you have a panel, paper or poster accepted and you cannot participate at the WCEH 2009, please inform the congress secretariat as soon as possible, as the number of presentations is limited, and your decline will giveso that another scholar has the possibility of presenting his/her work at the congress.
Presentations at WCEH Poster presentations
Oral parallel sessions
An oral parallel session will last 90 minutes and will include three or four papers. Sessions with three papers can, but do not need to have a commentator. In sessions with three papers without commentator, presenters have 20 minutes; in all other sessions (including PhD roundtables) the presentation time is 15 minutes. The presentations will be followed by a discussion. Chairs are encouraged to reserve enough time for discussion. Sessions will either consist of a submitted panel, or papers arranged into sessions by the program committee.
If this is your first international conference, and you are not sure what to expect, we have collected some useful links with suggestions on how to prepare a successful conference presentation. They can be found at the end of this page.
A PC and a digital projector is available in all rooms. You can bring your PowerPoint presentation (PC, not MAC) with you and put it directly on the PC in the workshop room. Please be at the workshop room 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the session.
Presentations for sessions in Malmö (all SATURDAY sessions) must be sent in advance or handed in at the registration desk, no later than August 6th, 2009 at 15:00
If you will need an overhead or slide projector or any other media, please contact the congress secretariat in advance by sending an email to
no later than July 30, 2009.
Poster presentations are an important way to introduce your research. In order to promote them, two plenary poster sessions will be held (there are no concurrent parallel sessions!). Authors will have a three minute oral presentation to introduce their research. You will be required to send a ONE SLIDE Powerpoint presentation by July 15th, 2009. The congress secretariat will provide a title and author slide, to which your slide will be added. Your slide should highlight ONE interesting aspect of the research presented in more detail on the poster. If you wish to read a text, please note that three minutes text equals about 2000 characters, or half a page of 12pt text. To use your time well, it is a good idea to test your text for length.
All posters will be on display at the WCEH 2009 exhibition area at the Radisson SAS Falconer Centre during the congress.
You will have to hang up your poster in the poster space yourself. Poster boards will be numbered, and we can supply you with relevant office utensils. A list of authors and poster numbers can be found at the Registration desk. You must hang up your poster no later than August 4th, 2009 at 13:00.
How to prepare a successful conference presentation
Please note that some of the websites talk about presentations of different lengths – WCEH presentations are 15 or 20 minutes, not longer.
ASEH president Nancy Langston has useful hints.
Poster design is specifically addressed in this website: http://www.siam.org/meetings/guidelines/poster.php
We welcome suggestions for additions to this list.
